Why study with us? The aim of this module is to enable ambulance paramedic practitioners/technicians to gain the knowledge and skills to provide basic resuscitation of the newborn in a competent manner.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion students will be able to:

  • Understand the physiological processes underlying apnoea, bradycardia and poor condition at birth,
  • Demonstrate airway management skills including strategies to help in situations where the initial attempt at lung aeration is unsuccessful,
  • Demonstrate the immediate management of newborn emergencies in simulations and appreciate the importance of communication and teamwork,
  • Develop a framework for succinct record keeping and communication of important details of the baby's condition at birth and response to resuscitation.

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteria Applicants should be Registered Paramedics or Ambulance Technicians. Modules HMFG4003 Resuscitation of the Newborn (20 credits at level 4) Course summary The module focuses on recognition of the need for resuscitation in the immediate newborn period; including physiological processes prior to birth such as apnoea and bradycardia; principles of airway management and lung aeration, direct laryngoscopic inspection of the oropharynx, chest compressions; practical experience of handling and using resuscitation equipment.
