12 weeks

How will I be assessed?

You will be provided with a workbook and resources. To complete the course you will be required to complete all questions and activities for each module within the workbook.

What will I study?

There are 4 mandatory units for this qualification:

Unit 01 - Understand medication and prescriptions
This unit provides an introduction to the many types of medicines learners are likely to encounter in a work environment. It introduces some of the legislation about medication and sources of information and guidance.

Unit 02 - Supply, storage and disposal of medication
This unit provides learners with an understanding of the requirements for safe handling, storage and disposal of medication and the roles and responsibilities of staff in relation to these procedures.

Unit 03 - Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication
This unit will provide learners with an understanding of the safe administration of medication. It covers the process, routes and methods of administration and some of the more common side-effects and adverse reactions to medication.

Unit 04 - Record-keeping and audit processes for medication administration and storage
This unit provides an opportunity for learners to develop an understanding of the audit process, the records that must be maintained regarding the administration of medicines and issues of accountability, responsibility and confidentiality.

To be awarded the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medicines learners must complete the 4 mandatory units.

What does the course lead to?

The programme supports progression to other courses such as Diplomas in Health and Social Care.

Entry requirements

You will need to be employed in a health care setting and have access to your workplace medication and confidentiality policy. You will also need to have access to a British National Formulae (BNF) in order for you to complete some of the activities in the workbook.
