The course is also highly appropriate for those who are working more generally in language analysis.
In order to focus effectively on discourse features during the course, participants should expect to:
- have a good understanding of the basic grammar (clause structure, determiner system, and TAM system) of the language they are working on, ideally as a write-up
- arrive with at least five collected narrative texts (if they are already working on a language). These should be preferably in third person and have tension, i.e. a complication moment, possibly a peak and a resolution
- provide gloss and a free translation for at least the one or two texts they are hoping to study in more depth during the course.
