Course Structure

Course Structure Level I consists of a total of 6 lessons, and focuses mainly on small businesses and a career in bookkeeping.
You can enrol, start and finish at any time – it is all self paced. You have unlimited access to your tutor right from the beginning. Everything is provided: course material, practice exams, membership and exam fees. Our all inclusive tuition fee allows you to stay focused on preparing for the ICB exam.

Prerequisite
Prerequisites are not required for Level I Basic Bookkeeping. The course is targeted towards complete beginners - those wanting to entry the profession as a career for the first time.

Duration: 50 hours

Level I Qualification
The Level I Certificate in Basic Bookkeeping is taken Online from home. Students will need access to internet connection for this.

All students wishing to complete the Institutes examinations and achieve membership must first successfully complete the manual, home-based,Level I Certificate in Basic Bookkeeping.

Following completion of Level I, students should complete both the Level II Certificate in Manual Bookkeeping and the Level II Certificate in Computerised Bookkeeping and any order.

After applying, the student will be emailed a confirmation from the ICB and a link to further instructions. The examination booking will expire after two weeks and if it is not used by this time, the examination will be graded as a Fail and the student must apply for a new examination and pay any necessary fees. Students are given two hours to complete the examination and results will be issued online straight away.
Examination Dates
There are no set examination dates and all examinations are available on-demand throughout the year.

Learning goals
Aim of the Basic Bookkeeping Level I course is to prepare students for the ICB exam and have a thorough understanding of the principles and fundamentals of double entry bookkeeping.

Course Structure
There are six (6) lessons as follows:
1. Introduction - The Nature and Function of Accounting
This first lesson covers the basic purpose and scope of bookkeeping for service firms, the uses of financial information, and accounting standards and conventions.

2. Analysing and Designing Account Systems
How to set up a bookkeeping system, the steps in the operation of the system and additional information on other business documents.

3. Balance Sheet
The use and and purpose of balance sheets. The balance sheet is like a snapshot of the business at a particular point in time. Every transaction affects the balance sheet in some way.

4. Double Entry Bookkeeping Recording Process
Step by step instructions on how to set up double entry bookkeeping procedures

5. Books of Original Entry
Understand the need for and function of \'special journals\'.
Understand books of Original Entry
Understand the need for and function of \'special journals\'.
Understand why Journals represent the start of the recording process - often referred to as books original entry.

6. Accounting for VAT
Understanding the VAT process
Understand methodologies employed for VAT calculations,
Learn how to complete the VAT 100 Form
Understand what entries are required to record VAT transactions for sales, purchases and expenses.

Upon completion of Level I Certificate in Manual Bookkeeping students may then progress to Level II Certificate in Manual Bookkeeping or Level II Certificate in Computerised Bookkeeping.

The course may be purchased as individual stand alone courses or a combination package which allow for a saving in tuition fee.
