This practical based course is delivered at the Botanical Gardens Birmingham. The Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills helps you learn the basic gardening skills you need for your first job in the horticultural industry - perhaps working as a gardener or maintaining a park

Course content

You complete 4 core units: • Plant container grown subjects • Prepare ground for sowing or planting • Prepare soil and apply an organic mulch • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers. Students will also undertake a number of optional units, which may include the following; • Cultivate land by single digging/forking • Apply fertiliser by hand to bare ground • Determine soil pH with colour indicator test kit • Plant flower bulbs for naturalisation or bedding • Prepare and plant a hanging basket • Prepare and plant container for display • Care for a planted area • Prune bush roses • Prune shrubs for winter stem colour

  • Maths, English and IT are compulsory subjects to this programme

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements are necessary, however a keen interest in gardening and the outdoors is essential. Entry to this programme will be by initial assessment and a supporting school/college or employer reference will be required.
