Who is the course for?

The course involves the study of a variety of legal areas and skills and concentrates on the acquisition of the practical skills designed to equip you for a role in today’s fast changing legal profession. CILEX offers a highly cost-effective and accessible route to becoming a lawyer and unparalleled access to a flexible career in law.

The CILEx route to law is the ideal way to obtain a law qualification for school leavers, graduates, legal support staff, mature students and those who already have family commitments. It is possible to start training to be an CILEX lawyer with a variety of qualification levels.

The syllabus is both broad and diverse. Modules in both years are aimed at providing students with essential skills to study law at this vocational level. Students will gain the confidence to develop both their practical, vocational and analytical skills. The Practice module will build upon the skills and legal principles acquired from the previous or current modules of study over the two years.

What will I study?

The Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is a broad-based, practical introduction to Law and Legal Practice. It requires that students achieve across key areas of Law and Legal Practice (ie mandatory Law units consist of: Contract Law, Criminal Law, Land Law and Law of Tort).

The Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice has been developed as a unitised qualification which permits students to adopt a flexible and tailor-made approach to learning. Whilst all students undertake a certain amount of core study, there is also room for students to take units which reflect their main areas of interest.

The qualification also includes a practical legal skills component. The Professional Skills units (units 16 and 17) require that students demonstrate key transferable legal skills in practical situations.

The mandatory inclusion of these units in the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice ensures that the qualification both reflects the pace of change in the legal sector and that CILEX students are well-prepared to embrace this change.

The qualification consists of ten units in total which are each assessed by CILEX and accumulated by the student. Each unit is regarded as a worthwhile achievement in its own right and certification is available at unit level.

To achieve the Diploma you must successfully complete 10 units from the suite of 17 units. However, if you have completed the Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice whilst working towards the Diploma, you will have already taken 5 units, so will only have a further 5 units to take in accordance with the qualification rules.

To achieve the CILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice students must ensure that their choice of units complies with the following qualification rules: Students must take units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 16 and 17. Students must then take 3 other units, of which at least 2 units must be Practice units; the units are undertaken as follows:

Year 1:

Introduction to Law and Practice
Law of Tort
Client Care Skills
Legal Research Skills
Civil Litigation
Tutorial

If you have already completed year 1 and you are now ready to proceed to Year 2, please see details below:

Year 2:

Some of the above modules are optional and therefore the course leader will confirm which modules you should undertake in Year 2. If you have not had a discussion with a course leader then please contact us.
