A2 English Language and Literature introduces students to a range
of literary texts from different time periods, social attitudes and
cultures. The course gives students the opportunity to develop
independent approaches, and to undertake paired and group work.

A2 English Language and Literature introduces students to a range

cultures. The course gives students the opportunity to develop

This develops critical understanding in analysing the ways in which
structure, form and language shape meaning and evaluating the
significance of contextual factors in a range of different texts
developing their knowledge from AS. Five Reasons to Study this
Course at Chichester 1. Explore cultural, religious and historical
perspectives. 2. To develop independent and imaginative thinking
that employers value. 3. To develop a lively interest in culture,
creativity and language. 4. To learn to enjoy words, language,
reading and writing. 5. To study in a friendly and enthusiastic
environment. What will I Study? The course is assessed by
examination at the end of the year and a piece of independent study
in the form of coursework. ELLA3 , in this unit you will study the
set texts 'Cupcakes and Kalashnikovs' a selection of woman's
writing from the last two hundred years and also 'A House
Somewhere' a selection of travel writing plus a comparative study,
spontaneous, planned speech and a piece of prose. ELLA4 is the
coursework element of the course, in this unit you will study
'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' by William Blake and 'The
Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood. How will I be Taught? You will
be taught 4.5 hours in the classroom a week split into two lessons,
you will also be expected to complete 5 hours outside the classroom
of individual research and study. Learning is a combination of
teacher-led discussions and activities based on student
participation in the form of individual, paired and group work.
Students are encouraged to share ideas and concepts and ask
questions and explore their own opinions and views. How will I be
Assessed? Essay writing forms an essential part of the course and
students are required to have a high degree of language and
literature skills. With emphasise on critical and textual analysis
being developed throughout the year. Homework is set each lesson
and at the end of each half term mock exams. What our students say?
The course was so interesting because you read several different
types of literature which all challenge your views and beliefs
about society in general. The language side is brilliant as it
teaches you how to use language in many different ways, it's a
really worthwhile and useful course.
