Have you always dreamed of playing a musical instrument and never got round to learning? This course, for complete beginners or those who have played a little before, can make that dream come true. Do it this year! Learning in a class is fun and helps to keep you motivated. You won’t be expected to perform by yourself. Do it this year! Learning in a class is fun and helps to keep you motivated. You won’t be expected to perform by yourself. The 2 hour session will comprise: learning to read music and playing simple tunes. Learning some basic chords and some ‘sing along songs’ to practice. Don’t panic if you can’t sing it won’t matter a bit! Term 1 Learners will recognise and play notes on the bass strings in first position. Learners will be able to count some times and play simple tunes. Learners will be able to play some basic chords and simple ‘sing along’ songs’ Term 2. Learners will recognise and play notes on the bass strings and on the treble strings in first position and begin to play in second position. Learners will be able to count time using tied and dotted notes and play more simple tunes and duets Learners will be able to play some more basic chords and simple ‘sing along’ songs’ Term 3 Learners will recognise and play notes in sharp and flat keys and play simple tunes and duets using these notes. Learners will be able to count time in more situations. Learners will be able play basic chords in open position and be able to fit chords into keys. Term 3 - Continuation Please note this five week continuation course is open only to those who have attended Terms 1, 2 and 3. What will happen on the first evening? Learners will be shown how to sit and hold the guitar so as to ensure their Health and Safety. Learners will play exercises on the open strings and two chords. What materials or equipment need to be provided by the student? You need a guitar. A nylon string guitar is best. Later you will need a footstool. Although some music stands are provided, please bring your own if you have one. Please bring a pencil. Any additional costs the student is likely to incur? Music. This will cost about £2-£3 per term. Display book for storing hand outs (essential) available from stationers, cost about £3. Watch out for beginning of term ‘buy one get one free’ bargains. Any additional charges for materials have been listed separately above. Gloucestershire College main sites have refectory facilities. Limited facilities are available in the evenings.

Entry Criteria

There are no entry requirements for the course. However it is essential that you are willing to cut SHORT the fingernails of your left hand. You also need time to practice at home the work covered in class. Term 2 and 3 are a continuation from the first term. It is not possible to join term 2 if you have not completed term 1, or to join term 3 if you have not completed terms 1 and 2.
