About This Course

Indian Head Massage Diploma This course is suitable for anyone interested in widening their interest in alternative treatments, beauty, holistic therapists and hairdressers or anyone wishing to enter the industry of alternative therapies. Indian head massage is known as a short-term 'healer' and has proved successful in treating insomnia and areas of stress. It is also beneficial for hair and scalp problems such as alopecia and poor condition. The course will cover a full working sequence of Indian head massage alternatively referred to as Champissage and the related theory including anatomy of the head, neck and shoulders. During the latter part of the course each candidate is required to undertake case studies on clients over a period of time both in college and at home and to complete assignment and project work. The course will involve assessment in both practical and theoretical areas. There is a written paper for health and safety and employment standards and a practical sampling assessment set by the awarding body. Set dates for the exams cannot be changed. Internal assessment involves practical observations to cover a range of clients and test papers to check knowledge.

Additional Notes

Students will complete case studies to cover the assessment range, this is done in students' own time on a range of different clients, gender and age. Purchases required at start of course - information will be provided Kit of oils, gown, text books and uniform required: order forms will be supplied by the college to purchase or mail order direct from suppliers. Exam registration fees apply as well as materials fees levied for : Salon Fee - charge for use of products, associated laundry, learning resources INDUSTRY INFORMATION Income Many massage therapists are self-employed and charge a sessional or hourly rate, which can be between £20 and £60 an hour. With experience and skills in a range of therapies, earnings can rise to around £40,000 a year. You may also receive tips from clients and commission for the sale of beauty products. Figures are intended as a guideline only. Key facts: •There are 51,500 people working in the health and fitness industry. •There are over 3,100 private fitness facilities within the UK with 4,397,200 members. •There are just under 2,600 public health and fitness facilities, which have over 2,758,400 members. •38% of the workforce is employed full-time, 42% part-time and 20% self-employed. •Around 29% of the health and fitness workforce is aged 16-24 years (compared with 14% across all industries in the UK) South West – There are 53,700 people employed in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector, of which 4,100 are employed in the health and fitness industry. The region offers a range of opportunities for surfing, sailing, surf lifesaving, Tarka Trail, Camel Trail and coastal paths. Industry skills gaps in the region include: sport specific technical skills; communication; management; team-working; planning and preparing work; initiative; project management; and problem solving.

Entry Criteria

A strong interest in complementary therapies. Mature, caring attitude and self-motivated to learn under own initiative to complete exam revision, project work and practical case studies outside of the course hours. GCSE in English at Grade A-C or above. An exemplary reference will be required.
