Course content
BA (Hons) Education*
The programme is delivered through a broad range of approaches to learning and teaching. These include active participation in practical and theoretical workshops, projects, debates, role play, case studies, lectures, seminars and work placements. The experience gained on placements will be invaluable preparation for working life and should help inform your career choices. Placement experience is also attractive to prospective employers.
Choose from one of three routes:
- BA (Hons) Education
- BA (Hons) Education with Counselling and Psychology
- BA (Hons) Education with Additional Learning Needs/Special Educational Needs (ALN/SEN)
Year 1 of the programme is common to all routes. You will study learning theories, counselling, additional learning needs, education in context and the learning environment in addition to having a placement opportunity.
In Years 2 and 3 you will pursue one of the three specialist routes. There are core modules including further placement opportunities, action research, Inclusion, The Creative Curriculum and Learning Beyond the Classroom. The specialist routes offer their own modules, in education or counselling/psychology or additional learning needs.
The choice of routes and placement experiences means that your programme will be based around your interests and career aspirations.
Career opportunities
This programme is for those seeking a career in an educational environment (schools and other settings), supporting a wide range of learners in their education. You may wish to:
- Become a Teaching Assistant/Learning Support Assistant in either a mainstream setting or in resource provision in either the primary or secondary sectors (this programme is aligned to the standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants)
- Progress to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) via a Primary Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
- Pursue a career in Education Counselling, e.g., in Local Education Authority central services
- Progress to a Graduate Diploma Psychology Conversion Course to enable you to pursue a professional career in Psychology (e.g. in clinical, educational or occupational psychology). This programme includes the 60 credits of psychology usually required
- Progress to other post-graduate study, e.g. a Masters in Education

Entry Requirements and applying
- 240 UCAS points
- GCSE English or Welsh and Mathematics – minimum grade ‘C’ or minimum Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy (entry via Access to Higher Education), or equivalent
For applicants without formal qualifications, work experience in appropriate areas will be considered on an individual basis.
