This module aims to provide opportunities for participants to explore the impact of social and personal factors on language and literacy acquisition and development and to reflect critically on the implications for their practice. Masters Level Module


This module aims to provide opportunities for participants to explore the impact of social and personal factors on language and literacy acquisition and development and to reflect critically on the implications for their practice. We will evaluate the role of context in language and literacy use, including the wider cultural, linguistic, socio-economic structures and historical developments that underpin current practices. We will investigate the impact of personal factors on learning, with reference to issues such as motivation and engagement, learner identities and aspirations and individual cognitive abilities and disabilities, including dyslexia. Participants will be invited to apply and evaluate research and theory from a number of different perspectives and to draw on the insights of learners in carrying out a case study of a language community and an individual within it. The aim is to create and maintain a stimulating and supportive learning community. The module is available as a freestanding course.
