Masters Level Module

This module offers for examination a theoretical model for comparing policies and strategies on adult literacy, language and numeracy, at local, national and international level. The content of the module brings together a policy and research dimension, aimed at underpinning the highly pedagogy-focused core ALLN MA modules. This course provides highly specialised ALLN input in terms of trans-national policy (like that of UNESCO and the EFA framework), international development of ALLN and the implications of UK and International policies on ALLN practices. Participants will be invited to critically examine a number of case studies, representing countries of the South and the North, and assess the extent to which they embody distinctive approaches to, for example, social and political theory, theories of knowledge and concepts of literacy, language and numeracy learning and use. Additionally, this course provides learners with an opportunity to develop their academic practices, specifically in relation to critically reviewing policy documents, academic research and international surveys. This module covers theoretical and epistemological frameworks influencing ALLN education since the 1950's. It includes multi-disciplinary theory, policy and research in the UK and Internationally. Learners are encouraged to contrast and compare ALLN policy and practice development across countries, theories, and research ideologies. Learners also undertake a small case study in order to develop their critical analysis, research and writing skills. Case study questions focus on the relationship between underpinning theory, policy and impact on practices. Learners focus on non-UK country research while lecture input focuses on the UK environment. A range of teaching and learning strategies are used, including tutor-led input, student led case study sessions, interactive workshops and student-led input from designated readings.
