Successful completion of the course leads to payment at Grade 4 of the Agricultural Wages Order.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma enables progression into Higher Education.

Course Content

The course consists of the following units:

Dairy, Beef and Sheep production
Crop Production
Farm Machinery - Operation and Maintenance
Plant & Soil Science
Animal Health
Forage Crop Production
Estate Maintenance
Work Related Experience
Investigative Project

Additional qualifications available in the first year include C&G (NPTC) Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations, C&G Level 2 Award in Safe Working in Agriculture. First Aid and Manual Handling are also taught. A 2/3 day sheep shearing course is also run for students on this course every May. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their practical skills on the College farm, which will include occasional weekend and evening duties.

The second year of the course offers the opportunity to achieve further additional qualifiactions such as telehandlers, PA1/2, ATVs, Chainsaws, Safe Ue of Veterinary Medicines, Animal Transport and Artificial Insemination. Much of the training for these qualifications is included within the course and in most cases only assessment fees need to be paid by students wishing to achieve these additional qualifications.

Entry Requirements

School leavers will need four GSCEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, or a Level 2 Diploma at Distinction level or Level 2 Diploma in Work-based agriculture with good levels of Maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work is required.

Employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as the industry is experiencing a skills shortage.
