Is it for me?
This course suits those with an interest in the study of living organisms, who enjoy carrying out investigations in the laboratory or as fieldwork. You will explore issues affecting the world today, for example, developments in genetic engineering. There is a lot of practical work and coursework under controlled conditions but assessment is predominantly through examinations.
What’s involved?
Cells, Exchange & Transport
Study how cells work together, the importance of stem cells and cell signalling. Not only will you examine how gasses are exchanged at the lungs and are then transported in the blood system around the body, but you will also research how transport systems work in plants. Your increased knowledge of cells will help you to understand how these substances can then move into and out of cells.
Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health
On completion of this unit you will understand the structure and importance of molecules in food. You will study how the human body responds to infection, as well as other factors affecting health. You will also study biodiversity and the importance of conservation.
Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
This unit examines how the cells of the body are maintained in an unchanging environment. You will look at how temperature and blood glucose are controlled and how waste substances are removed from the body. For plants you will study the importance of photosynthesis in nutrition.
Control, Genomes and Environment
You will study the important role of DNA and the causes of variation between living things. You will find out how biotechnology uses micro-organisms and enzymes to make useful products and you will research the arguments surrounding genetically modified organisms. The course is completed by studying the flow of energy through ecosystems.
