The Fundamentals of CBT module aims to enable you to use a CBT model to inform your own advancing practice and provide an appropriate base on which to expand your knowledge as an advanced practitioner in CBT. It will enable you to evaluate critically the key theories and concepts underpinning therapy, and focus on developing advanced and specialist skills to implement in practice.
FinanceIf you are employed within NHS North West and this module is to be funded by your employing Trust, please contact your Line Manager and CPD Lead for advice relating to funding and the funding application process.
What can this course lead to?You may be able to progress to the MSc/PgD Advanced Practice in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy award or PgC Evidence Based Psychological Approaches (CBT) award as appropriate.
Completion of the postgraduate award assists application for accreditation as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist with the British Association of Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapists, application for employment as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist or employment within the NHS workforce as a High Intensity Worker in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Services.
Resources and facilitiesThe lecturing team is made up of a strong variety of CBT qualified professionals who all practice CBT in addition to teaching it. A strong link between theory and practice means students receive direct feedback on clinical skills. The CBT programme also has strong links with a local Trust's Research Dept.

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteriaThe module is suitable for practitioners who are involved in the delivery of health and social care/psychologically focussed interventions across a range of disciplines, roles and service areas.

Intended Learning OutcomesBy the end of the module you will be able to:
- Critically analyse the theoretical principles underpinning a generic cognitive behavioural model and associated change techniques at symptom focussed and longitudinal levels.
- Critically compare and contrast the robustness of the above theory and underpinning evidence base with other psychotherapeutic approaches.
- Demonstrate advanced critical awareness and declarative knowledge of the core principles and skills in assessment, case conceptualisation and advanced practice at the forefront of cognitive-behavioural therapy.
- Conceptualise and synthesise complex client problems using a cognitive-behavioural theoretical framework to reflect your personal and practice development parallel to therapeutic change.
Indicative module content includes: generic Beckian CBT Model, CBT assessment; problem definition and analysis; suitability factors; goal setting; CBT socialisation process; collaboration; measurement of change; cognitive-behavioural change techniques; symptom reduction; socratic questioning; session structure; case conceptualisation NATS Rules and Assumptions; therapeutic process; reflection on practice via CBT model; instilling hope and change.
