Outdoor Education has evolved to become a very integrated and
dynamic industry not only in the UK but also globally. The Outdoor
and Adventure Activities sectors have grown in status and
popularity over the past few years and it is widely recognised that
this will continue. Such growth has seen a strong demand for
individuals with knowledge and expertise in a wide number of areas.
These areas include an ability to work effectively with groups in
dynamic and often adventurous environments; the capacity to design
and plan safe educational activities and to support and facilitate
personal development through connections with the outdoors.
Today’s outdoor industry requires individuals who can provide a
high degree of competent leadership and capture the elements of
adventures as they unfold. This is a dedicated programme that
integrates adventure activities and the visual image.
Each campus offers individual and distinctive advantages, providing easy access to the English Lake District with its unique geography. These exceptional locations in effect become your classroom.
What can this course lead to?Graduates are pursuing careers in outdoor instruction, educational development and youth work, in media production for independent enterprises and as freelancers for media outlets. The course also equips you for any field of endeavour where tested leadership skills, sound logistical planning and creative thought are essential ingredients. Our students have gone on to secure careers in HM Forces, the emergency services and teaching.
Resources and facilitiesStudents will also be equipped with technical outdoor skills and
provided with opportunities to develop these skills in climbing,
canoeing, kayaking, mountaineering, mountain biking and caving
using the Lake District, Snowdonia, Scotland, the Yorkshire Dales
and the Pennines as a backdrop to this training. Field trips may
also be offered into Europe (i.e paddling in the Alps, ice climbing
in Norway) and beyond (i.e climbing in America). Ample
opportunities are built into the program through the expedition
modules and opportunities for work experience for students to
expand this range of skills in different and challenging
environments.
Students are also provided technical skills input in media
development and production. Focusing on the use of both specialist
equipment utilising knowledge and experience in our media labs.

As a full-time UK student, you are entitled to a tuition fee loan which doesn’t have to be repaid until you start earning £21,000 per annum (if you're from England) or £15,795 (if you're from Scotland). International
The tuition fee for the 2013/14 academic year is £9,960.
Fees are billed annually and may be paid by the student or a sponsor. 75 percent of the annual tuition fees must be paid before or at registration. For students requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa, a deposit of £3,500 is expected as a minimum before a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) will be issued. Early payment discount
If you are paying your own fees, you may be eligible for an early payment discount of £1,000. This discount is awarded to students who pay in full before registration.
International scholarshipIf you are studying a full-time bachelor's degree (excluding teacher training and NHS-funded courses) or a top-up degree, you may be eligible for an international scholarship. The university has nine scholarships available. Find out more on our scholarships page.
Additional financial supportOur money doctors will be on hand throughout the year to help you manage your money while you’re in the UK. However, if you do happen to run into financial difficulty during your time here, you may be able to access a small emergency support fund.

ModulesThe outdoor education courses are all delivered through a range of formal lectures, seminars, workshops and discussion groups. Practical work, on the campus and throughout the local area, will naturally play an important role in your learning. You are expected to carry out independent study throughout the course.

Course summaryThis is an exciting degree combining adventure activity management and media skills. In year one you will undertake aspects of practical outdoor activity instruction and develop a foundation understanding of outdoor learning and theory, as well as studying photography, video and web design, all applied to adventurous activities. These themes are developed in the second and third years with modules in expedition management, adventure filming, practical outdoor leadership and outdoor activity management.
As well as using our campuses in Ambleside and Penrith, students also work with and share BA (Hons) Film and Television facilities at Brampton Road, Carlisle.Due to our excellent reputation, we receive a high standard of applicants for this course. Consequently, all applicants should expect to be interviewed by one of our tutors as part of the admissions process.
Assessment is through a range of techniques—strong emphasis is put on investigative work. The nature of the subject means that presentations, practical assessments and portfolios are all used as well as traditional reports and essay work. Assessment may also be based on group as well as individual work.
