This advanced apprenticeship allows you to study towards a recognised qualification whilst in an employed position. If you work in an engineering job and supervise others then this is the advanced apprenticeship for you.
This qualification has been designed for those who have completed an apprenticeship and wish to specialise in one of the many fields in engineering.

  • controlling printed circuit and allied circuit assembly
  • leading component manufacture
  • leading electronics assembly
  • testing
  • transformers and inductors
  • manufacturing electrical motors and generators
  • manufacturing electrical control systems equipment

Mechanical Engineering

  • tool making
  • engineering maintenance (mechanical and electrical)
  • service maintenance
  • fluid power
  • engineered systems
  • lift servicing
  • escalator repair and service
  • communication electronics
  • technical support
  • engineering drawing
  • quality control
  • non-destructive testing
  • computer control programming

How long is the course?

The course normally lasts from 18 months to 2 years, depending on the individual.

How will I be assessed?

Much of the study is done ‘on the job’ and you will be assessed on a regular basis in your place of work throughout the length of the course.

Underpinning knowledge and practical support is given one day a week in The Engine at Sovereign Way.

Success rates

The success rate is 100% for the engineering advanced apprenticeship.

What will I study?

As part of your advanced apprenticeship you will be required to complete the following:

· NVQ Level 3 Performing Engineering Operations

· Key skills at level 2 in communication

· Key skills at level 2 in application of number

· Key skills at level 2 in ICT

· National certificate in engineering

What does the course lead to?

At the end of this programme you will gain the confidence and skills that enable you to be a well skilled, time-served engineer supervising others in roles such as:

· milling and lathing operator

· precision engineer

· mechanical engineer

· technical services engineer

· electronic/electrical engineer

· fabricator/welder

· plater

What can I go on to study?

You could go on to study a HNC/HND course in engineering.

Entry requirements

You must be aged between 16 and 24 and employed within an engineering company.

You must have achieved a relevant Level 2 qualification to progress onto the advanced apprenticeship.

Good communication skills are essential.

How much does it cost?

If you are between the age of 16 and 18 the apprenticeship is free of charge. If you are 19 and above your employer must pay a one off fee.

During your apprenticeship your employer is obliged to pay you a wage at the minimum rate for an apprentice.

How do I apply?

Before you can apply for this apprenticeship course you must already have found an employer who has agreed to take you on as an apprentice.
