This is a very practical introductory course which will give you the basic skills and knowledge to teach in an FE College or for other training providers in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Please note that this award is not acceptable for school teaching. This is a single-unit course designed to meet the new national standards in further education teacher training. It is ideal for those considering entering teaching or those who have some teaching hours but no formal qualifications. The Edexcel award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector relates to the professional standards for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills offered at Level 4. You will have the opportunity to study alongside people delivering a wide range of vocational and academic subjects. You will develop the relevant skills and techniques which you can apply to your specialist subject. Sessions will be interactive with group activities and discussions designed to develop learners' confidence. These will culminate in a 15-minute micro-teach session which will be delivered to a group of peers. Great emphasis is placed on reflective practice and this is evident throughout the course.
Additional NotesThe reference to Exam (in fees section) relates to the registration fee payable to the qualification awarding body. This fee will be approximately £44. There is no formal exam to sit; assessment is achieved by successful completion of assignments. Teacher training qualifications are currently under Government review and therefore specifications and fees may be subject to change for September 2013. Please express your interest and we will keep you up-dated. Contact our Initial Teacher Training Administrator, Barry Evans on 01242 532106.
Entry CriteriaMinimum qualifications recommended by the Awarding Body (Edexcel) are level 3 in the subject(s) you teach. On submission of your completed application form, we will assess your suitability for the course and advise the next step in the enrolment process. As part of the enrolment process you will be required to complete an initial assessment (on line) and supply evidence of all relevant qualifications. It is recommended that you have a minimum of level 2 literacy and level 1 numeracy and ICT. To register interest for the course or to make your application please contact the Initial Teacher Training Administrator Barry Evans on 01242 532106.
Progression DetailsThere are several progression routes open to students, depending on their existing qualifications and their job requirements: those with a full teaching role should progress to the University Diploma in Post Compulsory Education & Training or Post Graduate Certificate in Post Compulsory Education & Training (both validated by the University of Gloucestershire) or the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
Case Studies"Deborah began as a PTLLS student who lacked self-confidence and was not convinced that she had the ability to progress. She is in her fifties, and did not initially think that she would be able to study for a new career at this stage of her life. She did well in PTLLS and decided to continue on to the Diploma course. She found this interesting, challenging and demanding, especially with a full time job outside of education. Upon completion however she was offered the role VHC Lecturer in Basic Skills English where she now helps adult learners to develop their literacy and communication skills."
